When choosing a diamond for an engagement ring, pendant or bespoke piece of jewellery one important decision is whether to select a natural mined diamond or a laboratory-grown diamond.

Both have their appeal, but understanding their differences, especially when it comes to quality and long-term value can help you make an informed decision.

At Titcombe Bespoke Jewellery, we are passionate about helping you choose a diamond that truly reflects your values and stands the test of time. Let’s explore the key differences between the two and why natural mined diamonds continue to be a treasured choice for every generation.

1. the origin story: a miracle of nature vs. modern science.

Natural Mined Diamonds are formed naturally over billions of years, deep within the Earth’s mantle. Each stone is unique, shaped by time and natural forces.

Laboratory-Grown Diamonds (LGD) are produced in a matter of weeks using high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) or chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods. They share the same chemical structure and optical properties as natural diamonds but lack the rarity of natural formation. A laboratory grown diamond can be grown in days/weeks, they are then often treated to improve/change colour.

2. quality & rarity: the natural advantage.

Unique Characteristics: no two mined diamonds are alike. Inclusions and patterns created naturally add to their individuality.

Brilliance & Light Performance: many connoisseurs believe high-quality mined diamonds display a depth and warmth which laboratory-grown stones often lack, but this is not something you would notice.

Rarity Factor: mined diamonds are finite, making them more rare and desirable, especially larger stones with superior cut, colour, and clarity. Although not all natural mined diamonds are rare, they are finite, where as a LGD can produce multiple identical diamonds on a daily basis and ordered in huge quantities.

3. long-term value: investing in timelessness.

Resale & Appreciation: historically, real diamonds have retained value, but we personally don’t suggest this should be a deciding factor in your purchase.

Heirloom Potential: natural diamonds have been cherished across generations, often passed down as family treasures with lasting emotional and monetary value. LGD can still be an heirloom passed down through generations but they have zero value other than sentiment.

4. ethical sourcing with confidence.

At Titcombe Bespoke Jewellery, we are committed to sourcing diamonds from trusted suppliers who adhere to the Kimberley Process, ensuring conflict-free origins. Including the total ban of diamonds from Russian origin. We also go further than our legal requirements as we are able to supply natural diamonds with proof of origin.

We can also provide a certificate which states the exact mine the diamond came from and the who the miner is. Today’s ethical mining practices prioritise environmental and social responsibility, giving you peace of mind alongside your precious stone.

5. sustainability considerations.

Whilst laboratory-grown diamonds are marketed as eco-friendly and ethical, their production can still have a significant carbon footprint. This is due to the energy-intensive processes and still require mining of rare earth metals to be grown. Mined diamonds from modern, responsible operations often support local economies and contribute to conservation initiatives.

We are able to source and supply LGDs with guaranteed sustainable practices, grown via Solar/Wind power due to our contacts which spread world wide.

6: Price between natural mined diamonds and LGDs is vast.

You will often hear/read about LGD being 90 percent lower. This is true with diamonds in the 1ct range but as the diamonds get larger the price gap grows, from hundreds of thousands of pounds for a 5ct DVS1 to £4,000 for the same grade laboratory grown.

This opens up options that aren’t available in natural mined.
